Blog 6- Prenatal Testing

I believe that prenatal testing should be routine and performed for all pregnant women. It is not only important for the mothers health, but also that the unborn baby is healthy during the developmental stages. Prenatal testing can help identify health problems that could endanger the development and health of the baby.
Factors such as age, family medical history, and ethnicity should be considered when considering testing. It is especially important that pregnant women over the age of 35 years old receive prenatal tests because they are at an increased risk of having a child with a chromosomal disease such as Down syndrome. Inherited disorders such as sickle cell anemia, which is common in the African American population, should also be considered.
I also think it is important that women are educated and prepared if they receive positive results from a prenatal test. There are a lot of decisions to be made when considering and deciding the results of prenatal testing.
I believe that it is important that parents become educated about every aspect of pregnancy, from the beginning to the end!!

  1. Kelli,

I agree that all pregnant women need to have prenatal care. I also, think that if a couple are deciding on getting pregnant, they should talk with their doctor so they know what to expect. I know that couples may say they are going to wait and then the next thing they know they're pregnant. The internet has alot of information but there is nothing like making sure you get the right information from the doctor. He can let them know if the mother will be a high risk pregnancy and what prenatal procedures are done at certain times during the pregnancy. I don't think alot of couples know how important prenantal care is. Some may think eating healthy is the only thing to do when it is not.
Prenatal care is so important to the mother and the baby.
