I believe that sex education is essential to teenagers and should be taught throughout the public school system. Sex is inevitable, adolescents are engaging in sexual activity at much younger ages than before. Sexually Transmitted Disease and pregnancy rates among teen females are shocking! I believe the acceptance of sex is to be partially blamed on our society and lack of morals.
It’s crucial that teens are educated on preventative measures to protect themselves and others if they do have sex. Abstinence plus programs in my opinion are more beneficial than abstinence only education. It is important for programs to encourage the practice of abstinence and inform adolescents of the consequences that can occur from not remaining abstinent. These programs provide information on condoms, contraception, HIV, STD’s and so on.
I also think that parents should be informed when their children are being taught abstinence plus education. Teaching teenagers about preventative measures and sex education is not encouraging them to do so as some parents believe. Research shows that these programs have no effect on the age of initiation of sex or delay it (Alexander et al., 2006).

  1. I cannot agree with you more. I definitely do not think by any means teens should engage in sexual activity at such a young age. There are so many consequences such as pregnancy, STD's, and not to mention how it affects one emotionally. It is time for people to open their eyes and know that some teens will not make the choice of waiting; therefore we need to provide them with the tools so they can at least protect themselves.

  2. I also agree. We are so lucky as U.S. women to have the advantages we do, but there are still some things that need to change. The difference between the way we treat boys and girl regarding sex is awful. If a teenage girl gets pregnant, she was asking for it, but if a teenage boy gets a girl pregnant, he was just being a boy. I believe that this mindset should be addressed in sexual education programs, and that women supporting women should become common practice. I also believe that teaching men to respect women, will provide our nation with better father figures.

Kelly I like the way on how you point out many important issues about sex, it is true that exist many resources and programs on how to teach sex, but I think many of this resources are not working very well because as your see that every year is increasing the number of young girl pregnant and number of people who is getting sexual transmitted diseases, but now we are having to many problems with HIV, it is increasing every day around the world.
