Violence is considered a major health problem affecting women worldwide. There are several forms of violence and abuse against women including; domestic violence, sexual and physical violence, and verbal and emotional abuse.
There are numbers of options available for women to reduce their risk of violence and assault. It is important for women to be aware of their surroundings, especially at night time. I live alone and am extra cautious when I come home at night. I keep my cell phone close and look around before I get out of my car, you can never be too careful! Women that live alone also need to make sure to always keep their windows and doors locked.
I believe that one of the best ways to prevent abuse and violence against women is through education. Self defense classes are beneficial and teach women effective ways to protect themselves from physical assault. There are also many women that do not know how to get out of an abusive relationships. I think it is important they are educated on ways to handle these types of situations.

Drug Addiction
Is it better to put drug addicts in jail or send them to mandatory drug treatment programs?
I believe that it is not only better but more beneficial to enroll drug addicts in drug treatment programs. Addiction is very powerful, it can lead people to do things that they normally wouldn't do. Many crimes are committed solely in the pursuit of addiction.
With drug treatment, addicts can get help and learn steps to living a drug free lifestyle. Programs such as the 12 step support alcoholics and guide them to a healthier life, mentally and spiritually. Treatment programs also offer tools for recovery and relapse prevention. I think addicts need help and support to get off drugs. I'm not advocating that drug addicts and offenders go unpunished, but the prison system is completely overcrowded with non violent criminals, not all drug addicts are criminals. By providing drug abusers treatment makes it less likely they will return to the criminal justice system.
